scope of work

as lead consultant and contract administrator, UDC was appointed to deliver the refurbishment of the third-floor wing A at East Manchester Academy. the brief was to centralise and upgrade all staff-related facilities to create a modern, cohesive hub. this included the expansion and remodelling of administrative, PPA and office spaces, alongside enhanced staff welfare amenities.

a key element of the works involved the reconfiguration of two science laboratories. these rooms are scheduled for relocation to a more appropriate location as part of the ongoing phase 3 development. this change has unlocked valuable floor area to accommodate additional general teaching classrooms, optimising the school's layout to better support teaching and learning.

prior to refurbishment, this area consisted of outdated science labs, fragmented staff spaces, and ageing WC facilities. the transformation has not only modernised the environment but brought together previously dispersed support functions to enhance operational efficiency.

challenges faced

delivering this project within a live school environment introduced a number of logistical complexities. with staff and students present during the works, safety remained the highest priority, both for those on site and the school community. careful phasing and ongoing coordination were critical in minimising disruption and maintaining the daily operations.

one technical challenge emerged early in the project; the existing electrical supply proved insufficient for the new food technology room requirements. this was resolved through timely assessment and an upgrade to the electrical infrastructure, demonstrating a proactive approach to risk management and preventing potential delays later in the programme.

consistent and open communication with the school leadership team allowed us to remain flexible, resolve site access issues quickly, and adapt work schedules to suit the school calendar, all without compromising the quality or timeline of delivery.

outcome

the successful completion of phase 2 marks a key milestone in the ongoing transformation of East Manchester Academy. the new staff hub is now a centralised, high-quality environment that promotes wellbeing and reflects the professionalism of the school’s team.

the refurbished spaces have been finished to a high standard, with the new food technology area standing out as a particular highlight. the reallocation of the former science rooms has not only improved space utilisation but also future-proofed the building by enabling curriculum-responsive planning and more flexible teaching arrangements.

most importantly, the school now benefits from a more efficient, user-focused layout, ensuring the staff and students alike are supported by a modern and inspiring learning environment.
